Pelvic Floor Repairs

Conditions that affect the uterus, vagina and bladder are very common, especially as women age.   Two of the most common complaints involve vaginal prolapse and urinary incontinence.

Pelvic organ prolapse is a condition where the supportive framework for the muscles and ligaments that make up the pelvic floor weakens.  This displacement of the vaginal support can result in a ‘dropping of the bladder’ (cystocele), a herniation of the vaginal floor with the rectum pushing upwards (rectocele) and can lead to many of the following symptoms:  Loss of bladder control, problems with bowel movements (constipation, incomplete emptying), pelvic pressure, an uncomfortable vaginal bulge or feeling that something has ‘dropped’ and so on.   These conditions affect many women and can affect daily activities, and limit physical activity and sexual activity.

Some women may benefit from a Pessary which is a vaginal insert that provides support.  However, most women get better resolution of their symptoms with surgery, which involves addressing all the pelvic floor defects and urinary incontinence  concerns at the same time.

All our Physicians perform pelvic floor repairs.  Please schedule an appointment to discuss whether you would benefit from treatment for this common problem.
